Over the last year or so, I have been reluctantly trying to work my way through Julia Cameron‘s book, The Artist’s Way. This is not an easy task for me. I don’t like all that touchy, feely stuff. One of the main ‘assignments’ is to do something called “the morning pages”–a task that involves rolling out of bed every morning and writing three (notebook) pages of stream-of-consciousness type venting and rambling nonsense to sort of clear it out of your head for the day.
I started doing this in a composition notebook over a year ago, and found the task to be tedious and boring, so I stopped. But recently, I resumed the task. I finished my first notebook this past Saturday. I still find it tedious. This is not brilliant writing. It’s not something you keep. It’s junk you throw away, burn, shred, bury, forget about.
What motivated me was the idea of filling the notebook and then destroying it. In my own way, of course. With paint. The idea of being able to ‘recycle’ the notebook appealed to me, and that is what happened Monday night and into the wee hours of Tuesday morning. I removed the pages from the book and used cheap, boogery craft paint (that needed to be used), and I began to layer on the paint.
I used an old piece of a credit card to scrape paint onto the paper, which was more fun than I expected. It dried quickly, and I was able to just keep stacking up the painted pages. What followed was an impromptu photo session around 1 a.m. I just couldn’t resist how beautiful my painty fingers looked!
I plan to turn those pages into an art/junk journal and possibly use some of it for collage and other projects. Let me know if you have any painty ideas of your own in the comments below.
Bye, for now!
